Rakhine Maha Muni Image
The Maha Muni Image has been recered by generations of Rakhine monarchs and is thus a historic edifice. The image is situaded to the north of ancient Danyawaddy City’s Sasanika land known as Sireingutta Hill. In Sakarit 103, Buddha attained Buddha Enlightenment while King Sanda Thuriya was reigning Danyawaddy of Rakhine. When the Buddha was 55 years old and had attained 20 Vassas, He visited Danyawaddy Ralhine land. While he visited several places throughout the land, King Sanda Thuriya and lay disciples prevailed upon Him to allow them to cast His Image which they would be able to revere forever. Then, Lord Buddha ordered the King of Celestial Beings and Celestial Being Withukyon to arrange to cast an image in His Likeness utilizing the treasure King Sanda Thuriya and lay disciples donated. When the image was completed, the head had a gap unfilled, so He used His power and stroked the head seven times thus completing it on a Thursday morning, the day after the Full-moon Day of KAson, in Sakarit 123.
Shitthoung Pagoda
In Sakarit 897, Administratior of what today is Thandwe, Ba Saw Thiri, who was the known as Prince Min Byin for he administered Lamonk Min Byin estate, ascended the throne of Mrauk U. He was also known as Minba, and he had ordered cast or sculpted all the Buddhas who had come into existence, for his reverence. Moreover, he ordered sculpted 80,000 (Shitthoung) statues in anticipation of the Buddhas who will come into being in future, some in stone and some in gems. There were 20,000 cast in stone and 60,000 cast in orecious stones and he had them placed at entrances to pagodas. The main pagoda was built in five tiers, surrounded by a variety of stone pagodas. The main edifice, the Pathodawgyi, ws built with hewn rock in levelled ground of Pokhaung Hill north of the royal palace. The Pahtidawgyi was also known as Shitthoung Pagoda or the Yan Aung Zeya Pagoda in memory of quelling the Portuguese attack.
On the south, west and north walls of the Pahtodawgyi, smaller stone pagodas were built. On the south wall ws built one large pagoda and 17 smaller ones. On the north wall was on elarge pagoda and 14 smaller ones. The statues around the Pahtodawgyi are of many varied mudras. On the roof of the Pahtodawgyi was built the Htuparyon Pagoda and 26 accompanying smaller pagodas. It was said to represent the Sattavitthana constellation.
Htokkant Ordination Edifice
The Htokkant Ordination Edifice is situated on a 30-foot promontory 300 feet to the west of the Shittthoung Pagoda complex. IN Sakarit 933 (1571 AD) King Min Phalaung and Queen Shinlat had it built. Under the dome of the edifice is built a Htupa Zedi, with a smaller one at each corner. In the chamber under the zedi is and entrance- way that leads from the south and access may be gained through a concourse tunnel. Alone the tunnel are 146 inches where stone images of the Lord Buddha are placed. On either side of these small caves are sculpted statues of ‘ 16th Century Mrauk U/ era people and warriors in their original costume-styles. Also may be seen are 64 hairdos of the Rakhine people of the time depicted in the sculptures.
In the circular path of the tunnel, halfway from and west of th e entrance, may be found a meditation hall of the King, called the Sabbath Hall, with two doors. The Sacred Chamber is under the Htupa Zedi beneth the dome od the main edifice. It was said to contain, in ancient times, a Buddha statue made with nine gems. In the front part of this chamber may be observed stone shelves where lamps may be placed.
Koethaung Phaya Pahtodawgyi
It lies near the dirt road to Ywahaung about a mile and a half east of Mrauk U Palace. It was consecrated in Sakarit 915 (AD 1553) by Min Diga was son of King Min Ba, donor of the Shitthaung Pagoda. So the Rakhine people say Father 80,000 and Son 90,000.
The pagoda Koetthaung has a cave containing 90,000 pagodas consecrated inside, with a big pagoda built atop. The outer walls are built in nine tiers. Around it were built 108 pagodas according to Buddhology. It was roofed as an ordination hall, with a single pagoda rising at the centre. It is 250 feet in length and 230 feet in width, with a height of 30 feet.
Andaw Orination Pahtodawgyi
It lies on the northern face near Phaokhaung Range in the Sunday corner of Shitthaung Pagoda. It was built in Sakari 883 (AD 1521) by Minhla Yaza Saw Mun, king of First Mrauk U period. It was known under this name since King Hpa Saw Thiri Minbu who founded the Second MRauk U Period while serving as regent in Thadwe, Dwarawady, conveyed the Sacred Tooth of Buddha consecrated in Mount Pathura of Dwarawady and placed it on the club after renovation ofMinhla Yaza Zedi and ordination hall. This ordination hall has a two-tier cave still bearing intricate patterns of lotuses and vines, thrones, belu gomban figures, flowers and vines, caves and thrones, and Buddha statues in small caves.
