Sittwe
Sittwe is a port city on the Bay of Bengal at the mouth of the Kaladan River, and was an important trade centre during colonial times ( when is was known as Akyab). Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine state for its Indian influence. Rakhine State is separated from the mainland by the Rakhine Hills. Still remain the colonial buildings but the traditional houses made of teak wood and bamboo are in typical Rakhine style.
For most traveler it is a stop-off point on their way to Mrauk U, but its sea views over the Bay of Bengal, markets and spicy local dishes are interesting diversions.
From Yangon, you’ll fly to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, where a leisurely city tour will introduce you to this region’s unique coastal culture. After drinking in the sunset over the Bay of Bengal and taking a night of rest in Sittwe, you’ll embark on a scenic 5-hour boat ride along the Kaladan River to reach Mrauk U.
Mrauk-U
A new tourist site which is becoming increasing more populare in recent years is the capital of Rakkhine (Arakan) called Mrauk-U. Some of the local people refer to it as Myo( or Mro) Haung, the old city. Ancient City of Mrauk U is located in Rakhine State, the western part of Myanmar. This remarkable former capital of the Mrauk U Kingdom was once the wealthiest city in Asia. Today, the archaeological wonders that the ancient kings and merchants left behind give us a glimpse into Myanmar’s fascinating medieval history. Mrauk-U is noted for its fort-like temples and pagodas of stone and brick.
In its golden days, it servced as free poty, trading with the Middle East Asia, Holland, Portugal and Spain. Portugues Visitor who had been to Mrauk U in the 17th Centuary, called it ’a second Venice! Whild other visitors compared it to London or Amsterdam. At Mrauk U’s peak, King Minbin (1531-53) built a naval fleet of some 10,000 war boats that dominated the bay of Bengal and Gulf of Marthabam. Many of finest temples ( Shittaung, Dukkanthein, Laymyenha and Shweaung) were constructed during his region. If you are visiting in the winter months you can see flocks of wild geese, ducks and other migrating waterfowl. To the east of the old city is the famous Kiccapanadi stream and far away the Lemro River. The city area used to have a network of canals.
